Wales is home to over 600 castles — more per square mile than any other country in Europe — making it a remarkable destination for a road trip by campervan or motorhome. From the towering ramparts of Caernarfon Castle in the north to the romantic ruins of Carreg Cennen in the south, history is woven into every landscape. The Snowdonia National Park offers dramatic mountain scenery, with Snowdon itself rising to 1,085 metres, while the Pembrokeshire Coast Path stretches 300 kilometres along some of the most striking shoreline in Britain. The drive from Cardiff to Anglesey covers roughly 290 kilometres, taking you through rolling farmland, river valleys, and upland moors. Head west from Swansea to St Davids — a distance of about 115 kilometres — and you will reach the smallest city in the UK, famous for its 12th-century cathedral. Wales suits campervan travel particularly well: its compact size means you can move between coast, countryside, and mountains within a single day. Narrow lanes and quieter roads reward those in smaller vehicles, though larger motorhomes are well catered for on main routes and at dedicated sites. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Wales, choosing from a wide range of campervans and motorhomes that match your group size and travel style. This peer-to-peer approach often means more flexible pick-up points and competitive pricing compared to traditional hire.
Wales is wonderful to explore from late spring through to early autumn. May and June bring longer daylight hours and wildflower-covered clifftops, ideal for driving the Pembrokeshire coast. Summer is peak season, with events like the Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells each July and the Hay Festival of Literature in late May drawing visitors from across the world. Booking your campervan early for these months is a smart move. September and October offer quieter roads and rich autumn colours in the Brecon Beacons. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing can make shoulder-season trips especially good value, and you will find a strong selection of motorhomes and campervans available from owners right across Wales.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 180 km loop follows the Pembrokeshire coastline over 3–5 days, passing through Tenby and St Davids. Stop at Barafundle Bay and explore the cathedral quarter. Campervan-friendly roads and well-spaced campsites make this an ideal short break in Wales.
A 200 km route through the heart of Snowdonia over 4–6 days. Visit Betws-y-Coed, Beddgelert, and the shores of Llyn Padarn. Mountain passes suit campervans well, and there are plenty of sites with hook-ups for overnight stays in north Wales.
Cover 350 km in 5–7 days, linking Cardiff Castle, Caerphilly Castle, and Carreg Cennen. This Wales route follows main roads through the Valleys and into Carmarthenshire, making it comfortable for both motorhomes and campervans. Rest stops are plentiful.
A 320 km journey over 5–8 days exploring the Llŷn Peninsula and the Isle of Anglesey. Take in Abersoch, Nefyn, and Beaumaris. Coastal roads in this part of Wales are scenic and manageable by campervan, with several well-equipped campsites along the way.
Spanning 550 km over 7–10 days, this route crosses the Brecon Beacons from Abergavenny to Llandovery and loops through the Black Mountains. Motorhomes and campervans are both welcome at sites in Wales's quieter valleys. Expect open moorland and reservoir views.
This 950 km adventure over 10–15 days circles the entire country, from Cardiff north through Snowdonia, across Anglesey, and back via the Cambrian coast. A comprehensive Wales experience by campervan or motorhome, with diverse landscapes and ample campsite options throughout.

Wales offers a superb range of campsites spread from the Pembrokeshire coast to the foothills of Snowdonia and the valleys of the Brecon Beacons. Whether you are travelling by campervan or motorhome, you will find sites with electric hook-ups, hardstanding pitches, modern shower blocks, and waste disposal facilities. Many are family-run and set in peaceful countryside, giving you easy access to walking trails, beaches, and historic towns across Wales.
Wales has no toll motorways, so you can travel freely without worrying about toll charges. The main routes — the M4 in the south and the A55 along the north coast — are well maintained and suitable for larger motorhomes. Speed limits for vehicles over 3,050 kg are generally 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. Many roads in rural and mountainous areas are single-track with passing places, so a campervan can be easier to manoeuvre than a large motorhome on these stretches. Wales uses bilingual road signs in Welsh and English, which is worth noting when navigating.
