Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Western Austria

Western Austria — a region worth exploring

Western Austria's Grossglockner High Alpine Road climbs to 2,504 metres, making it the highest surfaced mountain pass road in the country and one of Europe's most celebrated driving experiences. This region spans the provinces of Tyrol, Vorarlberg, and Salzburg, offering a remarkable mix of alpine valleys, glacial lakes, and historic towns. From Innsbruck to Salzburg is roughly 190 km, while the journey from Bregenz on Lake Constance to Innsbruck covers about 200 km — both routes winding through scenery that rewards a slower pace. Landmarks such as the Golden Roof in Innsbruck, the Swarovski Crystal Worlds near Wattens, Salzburg's Hohensalzburg Fortress, and the Krimml Waterfalls — Austria's tallest at 380 metres — give you plenty of reasons to stop and explore. Mountain passes and narrow valley roads are well maintained, though some higher routes close seasonally, so planning your itinerary matters. A campervan is ideal for threading through tighter alpine villages, while a motorhome gives you extra comfort on longer tours between provinces. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across western Austria, choosing from a wide variety of vehicles to match your group size and travel style. This peer-to-peer approach often means more flexible pick-up points and competitive pricing compared to traditional hire, letting you start your trip closer to the mountains.

Best time to visit

June to September is the prime window for a campervan trip through western Austria, when high alpine roads like the Grossglockner are fully open and campsites across Tyrol and Salzburg operate at full capacity. The Salzburg Festival runs from mid-July to late August, drawing music lovers from around the world — worth timing your route around. Autumn brings golden larch forests and quieter roads, while late May offers wildflower meadows before the summer rush. Hiring through Yescapa during shoulder months can mean lower rates from local owners, giving you more budget for toll roads and mountain experiences.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Western Austria

Western Austria uses a motorway vignette system — you need a digital vignette (available online) for all motorways and expressways. Special tolls apply on alpine routes like the Arlberg Tunnel and the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes use a GO-Box instead, charged per kilometre. Speed limits on motorways are 130 km/h for cars, but vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 80 km/h. Mountain passes often have gradient warnings and hairpin bends, so keep your speed in check and use lower gears on descents.
