Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Île de France

Île de France — a region worth exploring

Île-de-France is home to over 12 million people and stretches across eight départements, yet beyond the bustle of Paris you will find a surprisingly green landscape of forests, rivers and historic towns. The Palace of Versailles, one of the most visited monuments in Europe, sits just 20 km south-west of central Paris, while the medieval city of Provins — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — lies roughly 90 km to the south-east. Head north and you can explore the Château de Chantilly and its remarkable art collection, or drive 75 km east to the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, the 17th-century estate that inspired Versailles itself. The Parc Naturel Régional du Vexin Français covers rolling farmland and wooded valleys in the north-west, offering quiet roads that are ideal for campervan touring. Further south, the Forest of Fontainebleau provides over 25,000 hectares of woodland trails and famous bouldering spots. Île-de-France may be compact, but its network of well-maintained roads makes it easy to combine city culture with countryside escapes in a single trip. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform you can hire a motorhome or campervan directly from local owners across the region, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to suit your group size and travel style. Whether you are planning a weekend loop or a longer tour of Île-de-France, the freedom of the open road starts right here.

Best time to visit

Île-de-France is enjoyable year-round, though May to October offers the longest daylight hours and warmest conditions for campervan travel. The Fête de la Musique on 21 June fills towns across the region with free open-air concerts, while the Foire de Provins in September celebrates the medieval heritage of this UNESCO-listed town. Summer is the most popular season, so booking your vehicle early on Yescapa gives you the best choice from local owners. Autumn brings golden colours to the forests of Fontainebleau and the Vexin, with quieter campsites and competitive hire prices across Île-de-France.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Île de France

Île-de-France is served by a dense motorway network, including the A6, A1 and A4, most of which are toll roads operated by various concessionaires. Tolls can be paid by card or via a télépéage tag at dedicated lanes. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed as Category 2 vehicles and pay higher toll rates. Speed limits for these heavier vehicles are 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on single-carriageway roads. The Boulevard Périphérique around Paris has no toll but can be congested, so planning your departure outside rush hours is wise. Rest areas with motorhome service points are well spaced along major routes.
