From sleek A-class models to versatile coachbuilts and low-profiles, there’s a motorhome for every adventure—whether you need a compact getaway for two or a spacious multi-berth for the whole family.
The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
The Área Metropolitana de Lisboa stretches across 18 municipalities on both banks of the Tagus estuary, making it one of Europe's few capital regions where river and ocean meet within a single metropolitan boundary. From the iconic Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon's historic core to the wild surf beaches of Ericeira — roughly 50 km to the north-west — the region packs remarkable variety into a compact area. Head south across the Vasco da Gama Bridge, which spans 17.2 km as one of Europe's longest, and you reach the Arrábida Natural Park, where limestone cliffs tumble into sheltered coves along the Setúbal coastline. The distance from Sintra's fairy-tale Pena Palace to the fishing village of Sesimbra is only about 75 km, yet the landscape shifts from forested hilltops to golden coastal plains. Driving a campervan through the region is straightforward: roads are well-maintained, and you can move between city, countryside, and coast in under an hour. Motorhome-friendly service areas dot the main routes, so topping up water or emptying waste is never a hassle. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a vehicle directly from local owners across the Área Metropolitana de Lisboa, choosing from compact campervans ideal for Sintra's narrower roads to larger motorhomes suited to a leisurely Arrábida loop. It is a region that rewards slow travel — park up, explore on foot, and let the next headland or hilltop village set the pace.
The Área Metropolitana de Lisboa enjoys a long touring season, with April to October offering warm, dry days ideal for campervan travel. June is particularly rewarding: the Festas de Lisboa fill the capital's old quarters with music, sardine grills, and street parades throughout the month. Autumn brings the Feira de Outubro in Vila Franca de Xira each October, celebrating the region's rural traditions. Booking through Yescapa in the shoulder months of April, May, or September often means more competitive hire prices from local owners, plus quieter campsites across the region. Summer remains the most popular window, so reserving your motorhome early is worthwhile.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 80 km loop links Sintra's Pena Palace with the dramatic cliffs at Cabo da Roca, Europe's most westerly mainland point, before winding down to Cascais. Ideal for a compact campervan, with well-signed coastal parking areas along the way.
A 60 km route through the Arrábida Natural Park, passing Setúbal's dolphin-watching harbour and the sheltered beach at Praia de Galapinhos. Take your time over 3–6 days — campsites near Sesimbra offer full hook-ups for motorhomes.
Follow the Tagus for 250 km from Lisbon's Praça do Comércio upstream through Santarém and the Lezíria wetlands. This 5–8 day route suits both campervans and motorhomes, with riverside service areas and birdwatching stops throughout.
Covering 350 km over 5–8 days, this route runs from Ericeira's surf breaks south through Lisbon and across the Tagus to Arrábida. Motorhome-friendly roads connect coastal campsites, and the Costa da Caparica stretch is perfect for sunset stops.
A 500 km circuit over 7–11 days taking in Mafra's royal palace, Sintra's forests, Lisbon's waterfront, and the Setúbal peninsula. Plenty of campervan service points make this a comfortable loop through the full Área Metropolitana de Lisboa.
Stretch out over 600 km and 10–15 days, heading from Lisbon south along the Alentejo coastline to Porto Covo before looping back via Alcácer do Sal. A motorhome gives you space for longer stays at quieter coastal pitches along the route.

The Área Metropolitana de Lisboa offers a good spread of campsites, from ocean-facing pitches along the Cascais and Caparica coasts to quieter inland spots near Setúbal and Sintra. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, water points, and waste disposal suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. Facilities typically include hot showers, laundry areas, and small on-site shops, so you can restock without driving far.
Portugal's toll motorways cross the Área Metropolitana de Lisboa on routes such as the A1, A2, and A5. Tolls are collected electronically via the Via Verde system or at manual booths — hiring a Via Verde transponder is the simplest option for a motorhome or campervan. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are generally 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on national roads, so check your vehicle's weight class before setting off. Rest areas with fuel, toilets, and parking for larger vehicles appear regularly along the main corridors.
