New Zealand offers an impressive range of campsites for both campervans and motorhomes, from beachfront Department of Conservation (DOC) sites with basic facilities to fully serviced holiday parks with powered hook-ups, hot showers, kitchens, and laundry rooms. You will find options spread right across both islands — coastal spots on the Coromandel, lakeside parks in the Southern Lakes district, and alpine-adjacent grounds near major passes. New Zealand has no toll motorways for general traffic, with the exception of the Northern Gateway Toll Road north of Auckland, payable online or at a service station within five days. State highways are generally well maintained but often single carriageway outside major cities. The open-road speed limit is 100 km/h for most vehicles, though drivers of motorhomes over 3,500 kg should check for posted heavy-vehicle limits on steep grades. Mountain passes such as Arthur's Pass and the Milford Road may require chains in winter and can close temporarily. Rest areas with dump stations for self-contained campervans are spaced regularly along main routes on both islands.
