Why hire a campervan or motorhome in North Island

North Island — a region worth exploring

New Zealand's North Island stretches across roughly 113,700 square kilometres and is home to the country's largest city, Auckland, as well as the capital, Wellington — two cities separated by about 645 km of diverse terrain. The island's landscape shifts dramatically from the subtropical forests of Northland to the volcanic plateau around Tongariro National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where three active volcanoes dominate the skyline. Geothermal activity shapes daily life in Rotorua, where bubbling mud pools and erupting geysers sit right beside the town centre, while the Coromandel Peninsula offers golden-sand beaches and native bush walks just 170 km east of Auckland. Lake Taupō, the largest freshwater lake in Australasia, fills an ancient volcanic caldera and draws visitors year-round for trout fishing and watersports. The North Island's roads are generally well-maintained and wind through rolling farmland, coastal cliffs, and dense podocarp forest, making it ideal territory for a campervan or motorhome journey at your own pace. Smaller roads along the east coast reward patient drivers with quiet bays and seaside freedom-camping spots. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the North Island, choosing from a wide range of vehicle types to match your travel style and budget.

Best time to visit

The North Island enjoys its warmest weather from December to March, when daytime temperatures regularly reach 24–28 °C — ideal for campervanning along the coast or exploring Tongariro's alpine trails. January brings the Auckland Anniversary Weekend regatta, one of the world's largest sailing events, while February hosts the Waitangi Day celebrations at the Treaty Grounds in the Bay of Islands. Summer is peak season, so booking your campervan or motorhome early through Yescapa gives you the best choice of vehicles at competitive peer-to-peer rates. Autumn (April–May) is quieter, with mild days and fewer crowds at popular North Island campsites and hot springs.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in North Island

The North Island has no toll roads for general traffic, though the Northern Gateway Toll Road north of Auckland charges a small fee payable online within five days. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3,500 kg match standard car limits — 100 km/h on the open road and 50 km/h in urban areas. Vehicles over 3,500 kg are limited to 90 km/h. State highways are well-signposted and mostly two-lane outside Auckland, with regular rest areas featuring toilets and rubbish bins. Mountain passes such as the Desert Road (SH1) near Tongariro can experience winter closures, so check conditions before setting off.

We had an excellent experience renting our campervan from Laura. Everything was exactly as described, the van was well equipped and reliable, and we had no issues at all throughout our trip. It was a fantastic way to explore Southern France, giving us the freedom to visit beautiful towns, beaches and countryside at our own pace. Laura was great to deal with from start to finish and made the whole process simple and stress free. Highly recommended! 😊 Oisín & Ellen (Ireland)
