The North Island offers a wide variety of campsites, from beachfront Department of Conservation (DOC) sites to fully serviced holiday parks with powered sites, kitchen blocks, and dump stations. Whether you're travelling in a compact campervan or a larger motorhome, you'll find facilities to suit — including electric hook-ups, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi at many parks. Sites are spread right across the North Island, from subtropical Northland beaches to geothermal Rotorua and the bush-clad ranges near Wellington.
The North Island has no toll roads for general traffic, though the Northern Gateway Toll Road north of Auckland charges a small fee payable online within five days. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3,500 kg match standard car limits — 100 km/h on the open road and 50 km/h in urban areas. Vehicles over 3,500 kg are limited to 90 km/h. State highways are well-signposted and mostly two-lane outside Auckland, with regular rest areas featuring toilets and rubbish bins. Mountain passes such as the Desert Road (SH1) near Tongariro can experience winter closures, so check conditions before setting off.
