Porto's iconic Dom Luís I Bridge, designed by a student of Gustave Eiffel, has connected the city's two riverbanks across the Douro since 1886. This northern Portuguese city rewards those who explore on their own terms, from the ornate blue-and-white azulejo tiles of the Igreja do Carmo to the grand Livraria Lello, one of the oldest bookshops in the country. Wander through the Ribeira district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site lining the waterfront, or take in panoramic views from the Jardim do Morro across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia. The Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, set within 18 hectares of parkland, offers a welcome change of pace from the city's historic centre. Aveiro, often called the Venice of Portugal, sits just 75 km south, while the medieval town of Guimarães is roughly 55 km to the north-east — both make excellent day trips. Porto's surrounding roads are well-suited to larger vehicles, with wide motorways connecting the coast and interior. Hiring a campervan or motorhome through Yescapa means you can collect your vehicle directly from a local owner, often closer to where you actually want to start your trip. With peer-to-peer hire, you benefit from personal recommendations and a more flexible pick-up experience, making Porto an ideal base for a road trip through northern Portugal.
Porto is wonderful from late spring through to autumn. The Festa de São João, the city's biggest celebration, lights up the streets every 23rd of June with bonfires, music, and fireworks along the Douro. September brings the grape harvest season in the nearby Douro Valley, ideal for a campervan trip through the vineyards. Summer is the busiest period, so booking your motorhome hire on Yescapa well ahead gives you the widest choice from local owners and competitive peer-to-peer pricing. Porto enjoys mild winters too, with fewer crowds and pleasant temperatures for exploring the city on foot.
Porto is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 55 km north from Porto along the Atlantic coast to Viana do Castelo. Stop at the seaside town of Póvoa de Varzim for fresh seafood, then continue to the hilltop Santuário de Santa Luzia for sweeping coastal views. Campervan parking is available near the marina in Viana. Allow 1 to 3 days for this route.
Drive 80 km north-east from Porto to explore two of Portugal's most historic cities. Visit the Castelo de Guimarães, birthplace of the nation, then continue to Braga's Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary. Motorhome-friendly parking is available near both city centres. A 2 to 4 day trip suits this route well.
Follow the Douro River 130 km south-east from Porto into terraced vineyard country. Stop at Peso da Régua for a wine museum visit, then press on to Pinhão, where the railway station is decorated with azulejo panels. Roads are winding but well-maintained. Allow 3 to 5 days to enjoy the scenery at a relaxed pace.
Travel 180 km south from Porto through Aveiro, known for its colourful moliceiro boats and canal-side architecture. Continue to Coimbra to explore one of Europe's oldest universities and the Joanina Library. Campervan pitches are available near both towns. A 3 to 6 day trip gives you time to savour each stop.
Cover 310 km south from Porto to the capital, with rewarding stops along the way. Pause at the medieval walled town of Óbidos and the surf beaches of Peniche before arriving in Lisbon. Motorhome parking areas are well signposted on the A1 motorway. Plan 5 to 8 days to make the most of this classic route.
Head 350 km north-east from Porto into Portugal's only national park. Explore the Mata da Albergaria oak forest and swim in the natural pools at Cascata do Arado. Campervan access is good on main park roads, though some trails are narrow. Allow 5 to 8 days to hike, wild swim, and take in the mountain scenery.

Porto and its surrounding area offer a good mix of coastal and riverside campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, modern shower blocks, and dedicated pitches for larger vehicles. While options within the city itself are limited, several well-equipped campsites sit just a short drive away in Vila Nova de Gaia and along the coast north of Porto, giving you easy access to the city centre.
Porto has several large car parks that can accommodate motorhomes and campervans, though height restrictions apply in some underground facilities. Street parking in the city centre is limited for larger vehicles, so dedicated surface car parks are your best option. Overnight parking in public spaces is generally not permitted, so plan to return to a campsite or designated motorhome area for the night.
