Sicily is home to Mount Etna, Europe's tallest active volcano at 3,357 metres, whose fertile slopes produce some of Italy's most celebrated wines and pistachios. The island stretches across more than 25,000 square kilometres, making it the largest in the Mediterranean, with a coastline that runs for over 1,000 kilometres. From Palermo to Catania is roughly 210 km along the A19 motorway, while the drive from Trapani on the western tip to Syracuse in the south-east covers about 340 km. Along the way you can explore the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento, the Norman cathedral in Monreale, the ancient Greek theatre at Taormina, and the salt flats of Trapani — each offering a completely different side of Sicily. Coastal roads wind past fishing villages and sandy coves, while inland routes climb through rolling hills and citrus groves, giving you plenty of variety whether you are in a compact campervan or a larger motorhome. Many roads are well suited to both vehicle types, though narrower mountain stretches reward those who plan ahead. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Sicily, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your route and group size. This peer-to-peer approach means competitive prices, personal recommendations from people who know the island, and the flexibility to collect your vehicle in cities like Palermo, Catania, or Trapani.
Sicily enjoys a long travel season, with April to October offering warm, dry conditions ideal for a campervan trip. Spring is particularly rewarding — the Infiorata di Noto flower festival in May fills the town's baroque streets with elaborate floral mosaics. In September, the Cous Cous Fest in San Vito Lo Capo celebrates the island's multicultural food heritage right on the beach. Summer is the busiest period, so booking your motorhome early on Yescapa gives you the best choice of vehicles at peer-to-peer prices that are often more affordable than traditional hire. Autumn brings quieter campsites and comfortable temperatures for exploring Sicily's interior.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 250 km route traces Sicily's western edge from Trapani's historic salt flats to the hilltop town of Erice and down to Marsala. Allow 3–6 days to enjoy the Zingaro Nature Reserve and Selinunte's Greek ruins. Ideal for a campervan, with well-placed coastal campsites along the way.
Covering 350 km over 5–8 days, this route follows Sicily's eastern shore from Catania up through Taormina and around Mount Etna's foothills. Stop at Aci Trezza's basalt sea stacks and the Alcantara Gorges. A motorhome gives you room to base yourself near Etna for a day of exploration.
Drive 400 km along Sicily's Tyrrhenian coast from Palermo to Messina over 5–8 days. Highlights include the cathedral town of Cefalù, the Aeolian Islands ferry from Milazzo, and Tindari's clifftop sanctuary. Campervan-friendly campsites dot the coastline, making overnight stops straightforward.
A 600 km loop over 7–11 days circling the island from Palermo through Agrigento's Valley of the Temples, Syracuse's Ortigia island, and Catania before returning west. This route showcases Sicily's full diversity — coast, countryside, and cities — and suits both campervans and motorhomes.
At 550 km over 8–15 days, this route ventures beyond the coast into Sicily's heartland. Visit Enna's hilltop fortress, the mosaics at Piazza Armerina's Villa Romana del Casale, and the ceramic town of Caltagirone. A campervan handles the quieter inland roads with ease.
A compact 180 km journey over 3–6 days through Sicily's UNESCO-listed baroque towns. Start in Syracuse, then visit Noto, Modica, and Ragusa Ibla — each with ornate churches and local food specialities. Short distances between stops make this route relaxed and perfect for a motorhome.

Sicily offers a good spread of campsites around its coastline and near its major attractions, with options ranging from beachfront pitches to hillside terraces with sea views. Most sites provide electrical hook-ups, fresh water, waste disposal, and shower blocks suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. You will find well-equipped sites near popular areas like Cefalù and Castellammare del Golfo, as well as quieter spots along the northern and eastern coasts of Sicily.
Sicily's motorway network includes the A19 (Palermo–Catania), A29 (Palermo–Trapani), and A18 (Catania–Messina). Most motorways on the island are toll-free, which is a welcome bonus for motorhome travellers. The general speed limit on motorways is 130 km/h for cars, but motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are limited to 100 km/h. On dual carriageways, the limit drops to 80 km/h for heavier vehicles. Rest areas with fuel and basic facilities appear regularly along the main routes. Be aware that some coastal and mountain roads can be narrow, so check your vehicle dimensions before heading into smaller villages.
