The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
The Yorkshire Dales became one of England's original ten national parks in 1954, protecting over 2,179 square kilometres of limestone karst, sweeping moorland, and deep-cut valleys. The landscape here is shaped by centuries of farming, with dry stone walls stretching across hillsides and traditional field barns dotting the countryside. Malham Cove, a curved limestone cliff standing 80 metres high, draws walkers from across the country, while the Ribblehead Viaduct carries the Settle–Carlisle Railway across 24 arches in one of Victorian engineering's finest achievements. Aysgarth Falls, a triple flight of waterfalls on the River Ure, and the dramatic gorge at Gordale Scar offer further reasons to linger. The market town of Hawes, home to the Wensleydale Creamery, sits at the head of Wensleydale and makes a natural base for exploring the northern dales. Skipton, often called the gateway to the Dales, lies just 14 km south of Grassington, while the historic city of Ripon is roughly 30 km to the east. Roads through the Dales are generally well-maintained but can be narrow and winding, so a campervan suits the scale of these lanes perfectly. A motorhome gives you the freedom to wake up surrounded by open fells and move on at your own pace. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the north of England, keeping costs fair and putting you on the road with a vehicle that someone genuinely knows and cares for.
The Yorkshire Dales reward a visit in every season. Late spring through early autumn — May to September — brings the longest daylight hours and the driest conditions for walking and driving. The Swaledale Festival, a programme of music and arts held each May and June, fills village halls across the northern dales. Autumn paints Wensleydale and Wharfedale in rich colour, and campsites are quieter, making it easier to secure a pitch. Winter offers crisp fell walks and cosy evenings. Hiring a campervan through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform often means more flexible pricing outside peak summer, so booking for shoulder months can be especially good value.
Yorkshire Dales is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 45 km south through Wharfedale to reach Malham Cove and the limestone pavement above it, then continue to the market town of Settle for its Tuesday market and independent shops. Campervan parking is available at the national park car park in Malham. Allow time for the walk up to Gordale Scar.
Drive 55 km east from the heart of the Yorkshire Dales to Richmond, where a Norman castle overlooks the River Swale. Explore the Georgian Theatre Royal and the cobbled marketplace before heading into Swaledale for quieter lanes. Several campsites near Richmond welcome motorhomes and offer electric hook-ups.
Cover 130 km west from the Yorkshire Dales over the Lune Gorge to reach the Lake District. Stop at Kirkby Lonsdale for views from Ruskin's View, then press on to Windermere and Ambleside. Campervan-friendly campsites are plentiful around the central lakes, though booking ahead in summer is wise.
Travel 160 km north-east from the Yorkshire Dales through Teesdale to reach Durham, home to its UNESCO-listed cathedral and castle. Detour to High Force waterfall and the open moorland of the North Pennines AONB. Motorhome pitches are available at sites around Barnard Castle along the route.
This 210 km route heads north-east from the Yorkshire Dales to the Northumberland coastline. Visit Alnwick Castle and its famous gardens, then drive on to Bamburgh and the tidal causeway to Holy Island. Campervan overnight stops are well signposted along the coast, with several sites offering sea views.
Set off 250 km north from the Yorkshire Dales through the Eden Valley and over the border into Scotland. Explore Jedburgh Abbey and the textile town of Hawick before reaching the rolling hills of the Borders. Campsites in the Tweed Valley welcome campervans and offer a peaceful base for walking.

The Yorkshire Dales and surrounding area offer a fine selection of campsites set among open countryside, riverside meadows, and traditional farming villages. Many sites provide hardstanding pitches suited to both campervans and motorhomes, along with electric hook-ups, modern shower blocks, and waste disposal points. Whether you prefer a quiet field beside a waterfall or a well-equipped park near a market town, there is a pitch to match your plans.
Parking in the Yorkshire Dales is managed mainly by the national park authority and local councils. Most car parks accept larger vehicles, though spaces can be limited at popular spots during weekends and bank holidays. Overnight parking in car parks is generally not permitted unless specifically signed. For overnight stays, use a designated campsite or an approved motorhome stopover. Arrive early at busier locations to secure a suitable space for your vehicle.
