Auckland's Sky Tower rises 328 metres above the city, making it the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere. Spread across a narrow isthmus between the Waitematā and Manukau harbours, Auckland offers a unique blend of urban energy and coastal scenery. You can explore the Auckland War Memorial Museum in the Auckland Domain, wander through the galleries at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, or take the ferry to Rangitoto Island — a volcanic cone just 25 minutes from the city centre. The waterfront at Viaduct Harbour is ideal for an evening stroll, while Waiheke Island, roughly 40 km east by ferry, is well known for its vineyards and beaches. Hamilton lies about 130 km to the south, making it an easy day trip by campervan. The region's roads are generally well-maintained and suited to larger vehicles, though some coastal routes around the Hibiscus Coast can be narrow and winding. Hiring a motorhome gives you the flexibility to combine city sightseeing with beach escapes and bush walks in the surrounding Waitākere Ranges. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan directly from a local owner in Auckland, often at a more competitive rate than traditional outlets — and with personal tips on the best places to park up and explore.
Auckland enjoys warm, settled weather from December to March, which is ideal for exploring the coastline by campervan. The Auckland Lantern Festival lights up the Auckland Domain each February, while the Pasifika Festival in March celebrates Pacific Island culture with music, food, and dance. Shoulder months like November and April are quieter, with plenty of campsite availability and gentler prices. Hiring through Yescapa's peer-to-peer model can help you find a well-priced motorhome year-round, as local owners often set flexible rates outside peak summer. Book ahead for the December–January holiday period to secure your preferred vehicle.
Auckland is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 85 km east from Auckland across the Hauraki Plains to reach the Coromandel Peninsula. Stop at Thames for local history, then continue to Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach. Campervan-friendly freedom camping spots are available along the coast — arrive early for the best pitches.
Just 60 km west of Auckland, Piha's black-sand beach and the Waitākere Ranges offer a quick nature escape. Walk the Kitekite Falls track and explore Karekare Beach nearby. Roads are winding, so take it steady in a larger motorhome and check council signage for vehicle restrictions.
Drive 160 km southeast from Auckland to Rotorua, the heart of New Zealand's geothermal region. Visit Te Puia and Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland for bubbling mud pools and geysers. Several holiday parks in Rotorua offer powered sites for campervans, with hot mineral pools on-site.
Travel 190 km southeast from Auckland to Tauranga and the iconic Mount Maunganui. Climb Mauao for panoramic harbour views, then relax on the main beach below. Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park is well set up for campervans and sits within walking distance of the surf.
Head 230 km north from Auckland through Whangārei to the Bay of Islands. Visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and take a boat trip to the Hole in the Rock at Cape Brett. Motorhome parking is available at several sites around Paihia and Russell — book ahead in summer.
This 350 km journey north from Auckland takes you to the very tip of New Zealand at Cape Reinga. Stop at the Waipoua Forest to see Tāne Mahuta, the largest kauri tree, and drive along Ninety Mile Beach. Freedom camping is permitted at designated sites — check local council rules.

Auckland and its surrounding region offer a good range of campsites suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Coastal holiday parks provide powered sites, dump stations, kitchen facilities, and hot showers, while inland options tend to be quieter and closer to bush walks. Most parks around Auckland accept larger vehicles and offer level, sealed pitches with electric hook-ups. If you prefer a beachside setting, several parks north and east of the city sit within minutes of the sand.
Auckland's central streets can be tight for larger vehicles, so it pays to plan your parking in advance. Overnight parking in a campervan or motorhome is not permitted on most city streets — you will need to use a designated campsite or holiday park. For daytime visits, several car parks in the CBD accept larger vehicles, though height and length restrictions apply. Always check signage for clearance limits before entering a multi-storey facility.

Fabio was a really great guest and left the camper van in perfect condition. He enjoyed His adventure exploring Ireland and we were delighted he hired one of our campervans.
We had an excellent experience renting our campervan from Laura. Everything was exactly as described, the van was well equipped and reliable, and we had no issues at all throughout our trip. It was a fantastic way to explore Southern France, giving us the freedom to visit beautiful towns, beaches and countryside at our own pace. Laura was great to deal with from start to finish and made the whole process simple and stress free. Highly recommended! 😊 Oisín & Ellen (Ireland)
