California's Pacific Coast Highway stretches over 1,000 km along the western edge of the United States, linking some of the most varied landscapes you will find anywhere on the continent. From the towering redwood forests near Crescent City in the north to the sun-soaked beaches of San Diego in the south, the state offers an extraordinary range of scenery for a road trip. The drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles covers roughly 615 km via Highway 1, passing landmarks such as the Bixby Creek Bridge in Big Sur, Hearst Castle at San Simeon, and the wildlife-rich shores of Monterey Bay. Inland, Yosemite National Park draws visitors to its granite cliffs and waterfalls, while Death Valley National Park — the lowest point in North America at 86 metres below sea level — presents a completely different kind of adventure. California's road network is well suited to larger vehicles, with wide interstate highways and plenty of well-equipped rest stops. Coastal routes do include some narrower stretches, so choosing the right vehicle matters. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners based across California — in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego. This means a wider choice of vehicles at a range of price points, whether you need a compact campervan for a coastal weekend or a fully kitted-out motorhome for a fortnight-long tour of the state.
California is a year-round destination, though the most popular months for campervan travel are May to October, when campsite availability is at its widest. The Monterey Jazz Festival in September is a brilliant reason to plan a coastal trip, while the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena each January offers a warm-weather winter escape. Booking through Yescapa during the shoulder months of April or October can mean better hire rates thanks to peer-to-peer pricing, with fewer crowds at spots like Yosemite and Big Sur. Plan ahead for summer trips, as California's national park campsites are in high demand.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

California offers a superb range of campsites for both campervan and motorhome travellers, from beachfront pitches along the Pacific coast to forested sites in the Sierra Nevada and desert grounds in the interior. Many sites provide full hook-ups, hot showers, toilets, and dump stations, while others in national parks keep things simpler with basic facilities and a focus on the natural surroundings. Booking ahead is recommended for popular locations, particularly during summer.
California's motorway network is toll-free on most routes, though a handful of express lanes and bridges — including the Golden Gate Bridge — charge tolls collected electronically via FasTrak or licence plate billing. Speed limits for motorhomes over 4.5 tonnes are generally 90 km/h (55 mph) on highways, compared to 105 km/h (65 mph) for cars. Interstate routes like the I-5 and I-101 are wide and well maintained, with regular rest areas offering parking for larger vehicles. Mountain passes such as Tioga Pass (Highway 120) may close seasonally, so check conditions before heading into the Sierra Nevada.

Fabio was a really great guest and left the camper van in perfect condition. He enjoyed His adventure exploring Ireland and we were delighted he hired one of our campervans.
We had an excellent experience renting our campervan from Laura. Everything was exactly as described, the van was well equipped and reliable, and we had no issues at all throughout our trip. It was a fantastic way to explore Southern France, giving us the freedom to visit beautiful towns, beaches and countryside at our own pace. Laura was great to deal with from start to finish and made the whole process simple and stress free. Highly recommended! 😊 Oisín & Ellen (Ireland)
