The West Coast of the United States stretches roughly 2,000 km from the Canadian border in Washington State down to the Mexican border near San Diego, tracing one of the most varied coastlines on the planet. Along the way, you can stand beneath the ancient redwoods of Northern California — some over 100 metres tall and more than 2,000 years old — before heading inland to Crater Lake in Oregon, the deepest lake in the country at 594 metres. From Seattle to San Francisco is approximately 1,300 km, while San Francisco to Los Angeles covers around 615 km along the legendary Pacific Coast Highway. The landscape shifts constantly: volcanic peaks in the Cascade Range, fertile wine country in the Willamette Valley, dramatic sea cliffs at Big Sur, and sun-drenched beaches in Southern California. For motorhome and campervan travellers, the West Coast offers an outstanding network of state parks, many with full hook-up pitches right on the ocean or nestled among old-growth forest. Coastal roads can be narrow and winding in places, so choosing the right vehicle matters. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners based across the West Coast, giving you a wider choice of vehicles and pick-up points than traditional hire companies — and often at a better price, thanks to the peer-to-peer model.
The West Coast is a year-round destination, though May to October brings the driest weather and the longest daylight hours for driving. Summer is peak season, so booking your campervan early is a smart move. In autumn, events like the Monterey Jazz Festival in September and Oregon's Hood River Harvest Fest in October offer brilliant reasons to visit. Yescapa's peer-to-peer model means you can often find competitive prices even in busier months, as local owners set their own rates. Winter along the southern West Coast stays mild and pleasant for touring, while spring wildflower blooms in the California deserts are well worth the trip.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 250 km drive along California's Highway 1 between Monterey and San Simeon is one of the West Coast's most iconic stretches. Stop at Bixby Creek Bridge and McWay Falls, and overnight at clifftop campsites. A campervan is ideal for the narrow, winding roads.
Covering 280 km by road and ferry from Anacortes through the San Juan Islands in Washington State, this West Coast route takes in Orcas Island and Friday Harbor. Compact campervans work best for the ferry crossings. Allow time for whale watching and kayaking.
Drive 450 km along the full length of Oregon's coast from Astoria to Brookings. Highlights include Cannon Beach, the Oregon Dunes, and Cape Perpetua. State park campsites with full hook-ups are plentiful, making this West Coast route great for motorhomes.
This 480 km inland West Coast route winds through Washington and Oregon's Cascade Range, passing Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Hood. Forest campsites are well spaced along the way. A motorhome with heating is a bonus at higher elevations.
Spanning 900 km from Olympic National Park in Washington to San Francisco, this West Coast classic links Cannon Beach, the Redwood forests, and the Mendocino coast. Mix campervan freedom with beachside state parks for an unforgettable journey.
At 2,500 km, this epic route runs from Seattle to San Diego, covering the entire West Coast. Take in Portland, the Napa Valley, Los Angeles, and the beaches of Southern California. With two weeks and a well-equipped campervan or motorhome, you can see it all.

The West Coast offers a superb range of campsites for every type of traveller, from oceanfront pitches with full hook-ups for motorhomes to rustic forest clearings perfect for a compact campervan. State parks in Oregon and California are particularly well equipped, with showers, toilets, and electric hook-ups as standard. Whether you prefer waking up to Pacific waves or mountain views, the West Coast has a site to match.
The West Coast's major motorways — Interstate 5 running north–south and Interstate 10 heading east — are toll-free, though some bridges and express lanes in Washington and California require electronic payment. Speed limits for motorhomes over 4.5 tonnes are typically 90 km/h (55 mph) on highways, compared to 105–120 km/h for cars. Rest areas with free overnight parking are common along interstates in Oregon and California, but rules vary by state. Coastal routes like Highway 1 feature tight bends and occasional height or weight restrictions, so check your vehicle dimensions before setting off.

Fabio was a really great guest and left the camper van in perfect condition. He enjoyed His adventure exploring Ireland and we were delighted he hired one of our campervans.
We had an excellent experience renting our campervan from Laura. Everything was exactly as described, the van was well equipped and reliable, and we had no issues at all throughout our trip. It was a fantastic way to explore Southern France, giving us the freedom to visit beautiful towns, beaches and countryside at our own pace. Laura was great to deal with from start to finish and made the whole process simple and stress free. Highly recommended! 😊 Oisín & Ellen (Ireland)
