Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Queensland

Queensland — a region worth exploring

Queensland's Great Barrier Reef stretches over 2,300 kilometres along the coast, making it the largest coral reef system on Earth and a defining feature of any road trip through the region. From the tropical rainforests of the Daintree, a UNESCO World Heritage site north of Cairns, to the golden stretches of the Sunshine Coast near Noosa, Queensland offers an extraordinary range of landscapes to explore at your own pace. The drive from Brisbane to Cairns covers roughly 1,700 km, passing through coastal towns, sugar cane country, and lush hinterland. Heading inland, the distance from Townsville to the Atherton Tablelands is around 90 km, leading you from sea level up to volcanic crater lakes and waterfalls. Queensland's roads are generally well-maintained and suited to both campervans and larger motorhomes, with plenty of roadside rest areas and free camping spots along the way. Coastal routes hug the shoreline, while inland highways open up to wide, flat terrain ideal for longer drives. Whether you fancy snorkelling at the Whitsunday Islands, spotting humpback whales off Hervey Bay, or walking through ancient rainforest at Mossman Gorge, there is always something remarkable around the next bend. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Queensland, choosing from a wide variety of campervans and motorhomes to match your travel style and budget.

Best time to visit

Queensland enjoys a subtropical to tropical climate, so there is no bad time to visit. The dry season from May to October is especially popular for exploring the north, with comfortable temperatures and clear skies ideal for campervan travel. The Cairns Festival in August and September brings live music, art, and cultural events to the tropical north. Further south, the Noosa Food and Wine Festival in May draws food lovers to the Sunshine Coast. Booking through Yescapa during the shoulder months of April or October can offer excellent value, as peer-to-peer hire prices tend to be more competitive outside peak holiday periods. Plan ahead for school holidays in June and December when campsites across Queensland fill up quickly.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Queensland

Queensland's highway network is toll-free outside the greater Brisbane area, where electronic tolling applies on motorways such as the Gateway and Logan motorways. Speed limits for motorhomes over 4.5 tonnes are generally capped at 100 km/h on open roads, compared to 110 km/h for standard vehicles. The Bruce Highway is the main north–south route connecting Brisbane to Cairns, and it is mostly single carriageway outside urban areas. Rest stops with basic facilities appear regularly along major routes, making long drives manageable. Larger motorhomes should note height and width restrictions on some inland roads and national park access tracks.
